Editorial Reviews:

Album Description
Recorded in Todd's current home state of Hawaii, 'Arena' is yet another notable addition to Rundgren's remarkable career as a performer, songwriter, and producer. The album showcases his unique songwriting style and sonically captures the essence and energy of arena rock with bombastic, guitar-driven tunes like 'Mountaintop', 'Strike' and 'Mad', while the anthemic song 'Mercenary', transports you to a stadium with its epic chorus, with 'How Do You Like Me Now?' resounding to every seat in the house.

5 out of 5 stars Great Songs Period   November 28, 2008
Let's start with how people listen to music. In the car, in the front room, etc. I would only review a CD after repeated listenings with good headphones and as a long time Todd listener I love this CD. It may take a sec to get used to the sound, you might think a flashier drummer would help, or longer guitar solos. Then when you really get the words and how the words go with the music you say these are great songs. Todd is the Miles Davis of rock- constantly reinventing himself and this retro-re-invention is one of the best. I'm not afraid to learn...

5 out of 5 stars Todd Rundgren   November 25, 2008

4 out of 5 stars Getting beter with Pro Tools   November 22, 2008
This is Todd's second effort with Pro Tools, Liars being the first. The recording technique is getting better, the drum sounds are way better. The songs are pretty good as well. Like Liars, this album grows on you with each listen. The songs will sound way better live just as Liars did. I would prefer real instruments as opposed to programmed drums and keyboard bass though. If you get the chance to catch a live show with a band, these songs will rock! Strong cuts; Afraid, Courage, My Weakness. Gun and Solo Pissing Contest are also fun!

5 out of 5 stars Thankfully it's Todd   November 17, 2008
I'm still working my way into this album, but the Courage track is such pure, glorious, classic, instantly recognizable old-school Todd that it's worth the price of admission all by itself. At twice the price. And Strike, the AC/DC clone tune, is so much better than ANYTHING AC/DC ever did that it's a bonus. Buy this, if only for these two tunes. Hell, buy it if only for Courage.

5 out of 5 stars Buy this album - unless you're chicken   November 17, 2008
Todd can do whatever he wants, and this time he wanted to make an album with leather balls. Todd used to complain that his generation was "just waiting to die - we'll swallow anything if it will just get us high". In his last album (Liars) he complained about dishonesty in politics, and life. His past songs have inspired people to think. This time, he's still complaining, but now he wants to inspire action. What better way to get people up off their couch - write songs that will make the listeners rush the stage. These songs have more big hooks than a Long John Silver convention (the pirate, not the seafood). Do you like great waves of power chords, great precise vocals, and great ideas? No? Well, buy this album anyway and maybe you will see what you're missing.
