Product Description The Fix is the most explosive story of sports corruption in a generation. Intriguing, riveting, and compelling, it tells the story of an investigative journalist who sets out to examine the world of match-fixing in professional soccer.
From the Introduction Understand how gambling fixers work to corrupt a soccer game and you will understand how they move into a basketball league, a cricket tournament, or a tennis match (all places, by the way, that criminal fixers have moved into). My views on soccer have changed. I still love the Saturday-morning game between amateurs: the camaraderie and the fresh smell of grass. But the professional game leaves me cold. I hope you will understand why after reading the book. I think you may never look at sport in the same way again.

Declan Hill Scores a Match Winner November 8, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Dr. Declan Hill, who is a distinguished Canadian investigative journalist, film maker, scholar, and television news anchor, specializes in organized crime and international themes. He was a Chevening Scholar at Green College, University of Oxford, where his doctoral dissertation was on match-fixing in professional soccer. With this book, he went far beyond the safe confines of academia.
He spent four years on this compelling, intriguing, and well-researched book that has already been translated into several languages. No doubt, many more will follow in the future. For this project, he interviewed over two hundred people: Professional gamblers, Mafia hitmen, undercover policemen, top-level international soccer players, referees, and officials.
"I met men who claim they have bribed their way into changing the results of some of the biggest games in the sport."
In my opinion, this is a very entertaining and informative book. Part travel guide, instructional manual, and study into human nature, it is full of interesting characters and anecdotes. Dr. Hill, in great detail and with an engaging writing style, takes us around the world of match fixing.
Thank you for the opportunity to review "The Fix."
Open your eyes.... September 16, 2008 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
I just finished reading the book, I have to say it gets better while you read on. The author's research journey into the match-fixing world and the information that he presented in the book just captivated me. It opens my eyes to a world that I have no ideas about. I don't know much about soccer or any sports, and didn't expect to like or understand the book at first. But once I started reading, more and more I wanted to know about the match-fixing going on in the game. I have to say the author did a great job presenting the information. The chapter 'Salvation of Soccer' brought tears to my eyes, for sure I believe a good sport can bring hopes...
It is an amazing and eye-opening book for people, like myself, who don't know much about soccer or match-fixing, also a great book for soccer fans to rethink/look at their favor game from a different way. I have a great joy reading/riding through the author's research journey into the match-fixing world. Great job!
The only way to know is to read this book September 15, 2008 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
I started reading this book on Sunday night, and I finished it on Monday night. I ate this book up like a hungry lover of the most beautiful game in the world; hungry for information, hungry for nostalgia but most of all, hungry for the truth. Declan Hill has written a book which is astounding in all its parts; the meticulous research, skill in following leads, tying up various and diverse pieces of information, a thorough and intelligent analysis of the game, the power structures of corruption, the legal obstacles and the people. Not only is his writing fluid and his reasoning logical, it is also accessible. He presents a highly complex subject in plain English which allows the reader to follow him on a journey around the world in concrete, rational and credible steps, to reach his or her own conclusion. This book does not tell you what to think, it gives you the information, and the freedom to do so.
not something we did not know.... September 3, 2008 4 out of 6 found this review helpful
A fantastic story but known to people that have watched the World Cups from 1970 and after..Brazil and Italy, the teams that have won more trophies in this tournament is not because they deserved it but because they had help from outside the field. The strange thing about Mundial is that the ONLY footballer which was caught "dirty" was Diego Armando Maradona. The one that made football so popular in all over the world. All others are clean... My congratulations to the author.
