Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
As a soccer star for Crystal Palace and other top British clubs, Geoff Thomas was in peak physical shape. So when the recently retired athlete was diagnosed with leukemia in 2003, he focused upon an incredible feat of athletic achievement to help him survive. In the summer of 2005, following a bone marrow transplant that kept him alive, Thomas joined Lance Armstrong and the other elite bicyclists in the 2005 Tour de France on their grueling 21-day, 2,200 mile odyssey, despite having never before cycled competitively. This is his story, a true life tale of grit and determination in the face of a deadly disease, and of the iron-willed support of his family, friends, and fans who raised close to 200,000 ($385,000) for charity.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Self-centeredd author, not what I thought it would be   November 16, 2008
Geoff Thomas' book about overcoming leukemia by riding the Tour de France sounds great at first. I thought I'd get the predictable but effective formula of a healthy man brought to his knees by a mysterious illness, the long and arduous road to recovery, and the value of an inspiring, even foolish, goal in bringing forth more than anyone anticipated.

But then you read it.

Instead of an inspiring athlete, you find a callow, self-centered guy. He thinks he's great looking, amazing, and totally awesome. He then totally skips his illness, its effects on himself and his family, and the battle with his disease. Instead, he focuses on how he and his buddies rode the citizen's TdF ride one year.

It's tedious and uninvolving. I threw it away in disappointment.
