Little Mouse's Big Book of Entertainment November 30, 2008 Little Mouse finds a human self-help book dealing with fears, and begins to fill it our. Each page has a classic fear at the top of the page, along with its simple definition (Aichmophobia - Fear of Knives) and Little Mouse's specific fears about it. on the Aichmophopia page is pictures of the three blind mice, a poster from their circus days and a clipping from the newpaper report about the cutting off of the tails. What really makes this book shine is the extras. The book is more than illustrated, many of the pages are "chewed" on, there are cut-outs, flaps, fold-outs and more, giving readers plenty of discover and explore. Highly entertaining, and one of the most creative paper play books out this year that isn't a pop-up.
Unsure of the Book's Target Audience November 12, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Let me start with what I really enjoyed about the book. The layout is truly interesting and creative -- some of the pages have the corners cut to look like they were gnawed on, some pictures are taped in scrapbook style, and one of the pages even has a large foldout map. There is a diversity of texture and style on each page that makes turning the page fun, and I wondered what kind of creative layout was in store with each turn. But having said that, there was not much else that really grabbed me as an adult reader. Each page gives the clinical name and definition of a phobia Little Mouse has, and then an illustration to go along with it. There isn't really much of a story. It also would be hard for me to imagine it keeping the attention of most of the children I know, since the color scheme is kind of dull (mostly grays and browns and black). If you're really into books with interesting layouts and textures, you might enjoy this one. But for a book children want to read again and again, or for people wanting to hear a good story, this probably isn't the best choice.
Great book, amazing artwork... not really for the 4-8yr old set November 3, 2008 My wife and I love this book, our neighbors love this book, my co-workers love this book! A little mouse finds a "human" self help book and as you make your way through the pages you learn about all sorts of fears and phobias and have some space to doodle away your own fears. The illustrations and attention to detail with the mouse chewed pages, fold out newspapers and maps make this book a real treasure.
That said I haven't found anyone who thinks this book is appropriate for a 4 year old. I'd say it's better aimed at eight-adult and the under twelve set will need some adult guidance.
A Very Fun; Well-Made Children's Book on Fear October 23, 2008 Little Mouse's Big Book of Fears is a well-designed books with easter eggs (surprises) on every page. Your child (and you) will have a fun time discovering new things in the pictures/popouts/foldouts/inserts. The book describes all the things that little mouse is afraid of (and your child might be afraid of as well) is such a way that will open up lines of communication so he/she can discuss them, but not in such a way as to make them more afraid. Overall, a very fun, well-made book
Making the Big Scary World a Bit Less Scary October 17, 2008 Little Mouse has a BIG problem! He is afraid of a LOT of things. And he's here to tell you about them.
This sweet little book has a healthy ulterior motive. All children are afraid of things, and often times they seem silly to adults who don't remember those days when a little person feels that "the little things" can be pretty big, indeed. As Little Mouse shares his fears with the reader, his notebook also has a section where your child can list his or her fears, too. It's very cute, and the "scrapbook diary" way the book is laid out keeps a child's curiosity while letting them see that it's okay to be afraid sometimes...in the end, things will be all right when you learn to face your fears and not hide from them.
I thought my 9-year-old daughter might be a little too old for this. She had several anxieties when she was younger, and has only recently started to get over them, so had this book existed at that age, I would certainly have tried it for her. I'm pleased to say that she enjoyed this book very much, and at the same time I can see myself reading this for younger eyes and ears and having a positive effect.
Nicely done, right down to the back cover.
