Product Description
Fame It's a few years after rebel Tally Youngblood took down the uglies/pretties/specials regime. Without those strict roles and rules, the world is in a complete cultural renaissance. "Tech-heads" flaunt their latest gadgets, "kickers" spread gossip and trends, and "surge monkeys" are hooked on extreme plastic surgery. And it's all monitored on a bazillion different cameras. The world is like a gigantic game of American Idol. Whoever is getting the most buzz gets the most votes. Popularity rules. As if being fifteen doesn't suck enough, Aya Fuse's rank of 451,369 is so low, she's a total nobody. An extra. But Aya doesn't care; she just wants to lie low with her drone, Moggle. And maybe kick a good story for herself. Then Aya meets a clique of girls who pull crazy tricks, yet are deeply secretive of it. Aya wants desperately to kick their story, to show everyone how intensely cool the Sly Girls are. But doing so would propel her out of extra-land and into the world of fame, celebrity...and extreme danger. A world she's not prepared for.

  a beast January 2, 2009
Good book. If you liked the other books in this series you should read this.
Anti-climatic January 1, 2009 Extras is the fourth installment in the Uglies series. Readers are exposed to a new protagonist, Aya Fuse, as well as a different world -- after the "mind rain" in the previous book, people have switched from their beauty obsession to one with fame. It's fascinating to see how this futuristic world of Westerfeld's has changed, although it does become a bit grating over how fame-obsessed the characters are, especially Aya. The idea of a fame-centric world is realistic, but I couldn't help but want a reprieve from it while reading. The high points in the book are ones only fans of the previous volumes would enjoy -- seeing Tally and the Uglies world from another character's viewpoint. The plot held my interest, but in the end it felt anti-climatic. This book is worth a read from any Scott Westerfeld fan, filled with interesting world building and amusing scenes, but it isn't one of his bests.
Just as good as the others November 20, 2008 I love all of Scott's books because I always end up learning so much from them. Extras is no different. We get a society who is obsessed with fame, so much that they have hovercams following them around all over the place. The main character is no Tally Youngblood, but I liked her a lot and as usual, I love the things in the Uglies world, like their slang and all their cool technology. We get to see Tally again after three years, so that was cool, too. If you liked the Uglies series, you should read this book.
Different Place, Different Time, Still Great October 3, 2008 Just as well written and adventure filled as the first three, Extras takes place a few years after the trilogy, and takes place in Japan in the new post-syrgery world. In this new world everyone has a video camera on them all the time, and popularity is ranked down to the last person. Looking for glory, our heroine finds a bit more than she bargained for, throwing her into Tally Youngblood's world.
My Review for Extras September 30, 2008 Extras was a fanatastic book, and produced quite a few surprises. First of all, i was expecting the book to be in the point of view of Tally Youngblood, but it was featuring Aya Fuse, a young girl with no popularity, which basically dictates your life in the world after the mind rain. She struggles to find some way to make herself famous. (though many people complain that she was too obsessed with fame, how many of us can say we wouldn't if success was based on your rank?) Aya discovered a group of girls that will do crazy stunts for fun, all in secret. When Aya is about to burst and tell, she discovers something even more frightening, a group of missiles, that could launch metal at cities and make humans go extinct. With her older brother, and a famous boy who is sweet on her, she travels around with Tally Youngblood, trying to solve a mystery which might just threaten the world.
