Editorial Reviews:

Product Description

No matter how many times Kyle rewrites the scene, he can't get it right. He tries it in the style of Hitchcock, Tarantino, Eastwood, all of his favorite directors?but regardless of the style, he can't remember what happened that day in the shed. The day Jason died. And until he can, there is one question that keeps haunting Kyle: Did he kill his best friend on purpose?

Debut novelist Heidi Ayarbe delves into the depths of the human psyche as Kyle wrestles with inner demons that make him wonder whether the world will ever be okay again?or if the best thing to do is find a way to join Jason.

5 out of 5 stars I think this book could get more kids reading for fun   December 1, 2008
This was the first book in a long while that kept me up reading well past midnight. When I was younger, I would always seek out books with female characters, but this one has a guy, Kyle, and it was really easy to get into his world. He felt real. I felt like I was holding my breath from the end of the first chapter on--and I cared more and more as it went along. Freeze Frame is intense, funny, sad, and thought-provoking. I think it would be amazing for a teen reading group or in class because of the issues it brings up and the memorable characters.
I don't really get how someone can leave a one star review without even talking about the book itself. Freeze Frame is worth reading--and I'd definitely give it five stars for the great voice and great story.

5 out of 5 stars Ooops I'm giving this book 5 stars! I hope thats okay!!!   November 18, 2008

At the risk of somehow offending someone who seems to write reviews other than read books I'm giving this book five stars.

This is an incredible book and even more amazing given that it is from a first time novelist. However, I'm not exactly sure what the young adult genre is as this book seemed very appropriate for those of us who have already "survived" high school.

Ms. Ayarbe has taken a story of tragedy and framed it in high school angst. Her grasp of the school environment was almost uncomfortable at times.

An unbelievable book that I will be likely giving to some teacher friends (and non-teacher friends too I guess) for Christmas while I eagerly await for more from the author.

1 out of 5 stars Can you spell AstroTurfing   November 17, 2008

If you don't know what astroturfing is, but you read these reviews on amazon, I strongly encourage you to go to Wikipedia or UrbanDictionary and look it up.

This is the most blatent, least subtle example that I have ever seen on Amazon.

Let's see. In the first three weeks the book is out, it gets 11 reviews, and they are all five-star. How likely is that? Lots of other books have been out for years and don't yet have 11 reviews. And all the reviews aren't just five-star, but they are glowing.

The next step in this drill will be for those reviewers to come back here and give me an unhelpful vote, so look for 11 unhelpful votes for this review within the next few weeks.

I encourage every legitimate reader of these reviews to be on the lookout for astroturfing, and to call it when they see it.

5 out of 5 stars A great read.   November 1, 2008

I was concerned that Heidi's use of a movie approach would be off putting. I am not a movie buff. However, she did such a great job that I was hooked at the very beginning and could not put the book down. I stayed up way too late to finish it and cried at the end. This is a powerful book. Things can and do happen in life and "life as we know it" can alter in a second. Then we have to deal with it. This is about how Kyle did deal with his post-Jason life. Great read for teens and adults.

5 out of 5 stars An incredible debut   October 27, 2008

Time stops for Kyle at 10:46 on October 8. It was when his best friend Jason dies of a gunshot wound, delivered by Kyle. But Kyle can't remember what happened that day in the shed that the best friends found the gun; he doesn't know if he pulled the trigger on purpose. So time stops. Kyle finds himself stuck in the moment, trying to remember exactly what happened and if he really is to blame. He experiences numerous ups and downs in his grief as he tries to deal with what he's done to his best friend. He faces new enemies, including himself, but finds allies in unexpected places. "Freeze Frame" is an amazingly well-written story of a boy struggling to come to terms with what he's done and make peace with himself.

I must begin by saying that I was incredibly impressed when I realized this was Ayarbe's first novel; it was so wonderfully written. I love how Ayarbe explores Kyle's mind through the course of the story and how Kyle really has to grapple with everything gone wrong in his life stemming from the death of his best friend. It's just so realistic and emotional. You get to know so much about Kyle through his dialogue, interactions with the other characters, his memories of Jason, and his love of movies. I really liked how filmography is incorporated in Kyle's life, and it made me so glad, or at least relieved, that moviemaking helped get Kyle's life back to semi-normal.

Death is always a difficult topic to write about, and I have to say that Ayarbe does a great job in "Freeze Frame." I have to rank it high among other books on this subject, along with "The Day I Killed James" by Catherine Ryan Hyde and "Saving Zoe" by Alyson Noel. Readers who loved those novels will like "Freeze Frame" as well.

"Freeze Frame" is not a high-action story. It's an emotional journey that distinguishes itself through its extensive characterization and its exploration of the human mind. It's about learning to deal with what you've done and making peace with it. "Freeze Frame" is such a beautiful although extremely sad story. I recommend it for anyone looking for a though-provoking and meaningful story. I look forward to reading more novels from Heidi Ayarbe as well.
