Product Description
This arc of Scott Westerfeld's UGLIES trilogy follows the high-tech adventures of Tally Youngblood. As an ugly, then a pretty, and finally a special, Tally works to take down a society created to function with perfect-looking people who never have a chance to think for themselves.

5 out of 5 stars highly recommended for ages 11-13   January 4, 2009
The plot is somewhat similar to "Brave New World"--a future society where humans are surgically altered to fulfill various roles. Tally begins the trilogy as an 15 year old "ugly"--not yet surgically improved, and is filling time waiting to join her older "pretty" friends who have been made supermodel beautiful (but vapid) on their 16th birthdays and are filling their lives with parties in "New Pretty Town". She meets Shay, another 15 year old who tells her about the Smoke, a place where people have escaped surgery and are living in the wild. Shay tried to convince Tally to join her in escaping to the Smoke before their surgery but Tally stays behind, wanting to become pretty and join her friend Peiris in New Pretty Town. However on the day of her surgery Tally is taken instead to Special Circumstances, and told she will be ugly forever unless she can find Shay and lead the authorities to the Smoke. I wont reveal more spoilers but let me assure you that the plot moves rapidly with lots of action, many different aspects of the future societies revealed, and decent character development. Both my daughter and my son devoured these, so I picked them up and couldn't put them down either. They are easy reading, but are full of themes and ideas that will engage adolescents--environmentalism,ecological disasters, human nature, identity formation, love, friendship, rebellion, conformity, cliques, choices, and conflicting desires.

5 out of 5 stars Great!   December 20, 2008
Uglies, Pretties, and Specials is about a world were everyone at 16 turns "pretty" with extreme cosmetic surgery. Up until that, they're called "uglies" and live in dorms. Tally waits to turn 16, and goes to New Pretty Town to see her friend, Peris, where she is turned away and back to Uglyville. then, she meets Shay. Shay doesn't want to be Pretty and tells Tally that she's going to run away to the Smoke (rebels who don't become Pretty). Shay tries to tell her to go, but she deoesn't. Then, Tally meets Dr. Cable. Doctor Cable tells Tally to bring Shay and the rest of the Smokies back. SHe says yes and is given a hear locket thatwill track her. When she accidentally signals it by throwing it in the fire, Specials (super strong, fast, pretty enhanced people with bones of steel and weaponized teeth and nails) they attact the Smoke.

4 out of 5 stars Uglies   December 16, 2008
The uglies series is really a good set of books, the author created a good setting and plot line and it doesn't leave you bored very often. I'm really a picky reader so this is a pretty good book.

3 out of 5 stars Just okay *spoilers*   December 4, 2008
I found these books to be just "okay". With the other Scott Westerfeld novels, the imagery is fascinating, his style is faultless, and the characters are very deep. The story is also very unexpected. But I dislike the story for a few reasons:

Uglies: Very gripping in the beginning, but very slow in the middle! Tally being alone in the woods, traveling towards her new home is slow-going and hard to read all the way through. And I, personally, felt more excited to hear about Tally as a pretty than a perpetual "ugly". It did have tons of action, though, and is so imaginative. I loved the parts about hoverboarding.

Pretties: Awful. The whole story made me feel, as the reader, as if I were in prison myself. A very uncomfortable read and Tally in the "pre-Rusty" village was hard to read as well. I was just very "bogus". But Zane was a likable character and fun to read, the fights between Shay and Tally were good, the revelation of the Cutters, and the END of the book were good.

Specials. Great intro. But once again, the protagonist Tally is uncomfortable to read about IMO because she can't think for herself, literally (because of the "Special" surge). I'll admit, I'm only halfway through this one, and I expect a great ending. But again, they go into "adventure mode" in the middle of the book! The Special Cutters seem underwhelming, since their powers suddenly seem so weak.

It has taken me a long time to get through these books simply because they get very boring at points. Really, it's worth it just to buy "Specials", probably the most entertaining one, since there are so many "flashbacks" of what was already explained in the past two books.

I personally recommend "The"Midnighters" by Scott Westerfeld. Though shorter, this trilogy is much more entertaining and fast paced.
