Product Description

In the newest devastatingly intense thriller by #1 New York Times bestselling phenomenon Vince Flynn, his deadly and charismatic hero Mitch Rapp wages a war against a new enemy with the help of a fellow soldier as dedicated and as lethal as they come.

Vince Flynn's thrillers, featuring counterterrorism operative Mitch Rapp, have dominated the imagination of readers everywhere. In them, Flynn has captured the secretive world of the fearless men and women, who, bound by duty, risk their lives in a covert war they must hide from even their own political leaders.

Now, Rapp and his protege, Mike Nash, may have met their match. The CIA has detected and intercepted two terrorist cells, but a third is feared to be on the loose. Led by a dangerous mastermind obsessed with becoming the leader of al-Qaeda, this determined and terrifying group is about to descend on America.

Rapp needs the best on this assignment, and Nash, who has served his government honorably for sixteen years first as an officer in the Marine Corps and then as an operative in an elite counterterrorism team run by Rapp is his choice. Together, they have made careers out of meeting violence with extreme violence and have never wavered in the fight against the jihadists and their culture of death. Both have fought the war on terrorism in secret without accolades or acknowledgment of their personal sacrifices. Both have been forced to lie to virtually every single person they care about, and both have soldiered on with the knowledge that their hard work and lethal tactics have saved thousands of lives.

But the political winds have changed in America, and certain leaders on Capitol Hill are pushing to have men like Rapp and Nash put back on a short leash. And then one spring afternoon in Washington, DC, everything changes.

Using his insider knowledge of intelligence agencies and the military, Flynn once again delivers an all-too-real portrayal of a war that is that is waged every day by a handful of brave, devoted souls. Smart, fast-paced, and jaw-droppingly realistic, Extreme Measures is the political thriller of our time.

2 out of 5 stars Huh, did the editors push him to write a book this summer?   November 21, 2008
Very disappointing. I will read his next book, but this was too dull. Typical plot- Mitch Rapp, out of control fighting against those evil people in the US Government, trying to save the world from terrorists. Sorry Vince, you gotta shake it up a little. Give Mitch Rapp a break next book, intro someone new and bring him back later.
This book focuses far too much on the boring, mundane Senate Committee meetings. Boring.

4 out of 5 stars Extreme Measures: A Thriller By Vincecnt Flynn   November 21, 2008
I have been a huge fan of Vincent Flynn since his first book Term Limits. Extreme Measures is well written and enjoyable reading. The book is action packed and fast pace. A type of book you want to hurry up and finish reading just to see how the story ends and then go back and reread the book at a slower speed. If this is your first time reading one of Mr. Flynn books it may a little hard to understand the deepness of the main character in the book. His fans have enjoyed the development of Rapp and Doctor Kennedy since his second book but each book does stand-alone. Most of my friends that I have suggested reading one his books have purchase all of books after reading their first book.

If you enjoy Clancy you will positively enjoy all of Flynn books. The biggest difference between the two authors is Clancy written a 400-page book in 700 pages. Mr. Flynn writing style is better and is easier to read. If you are a fan of the show "24" You will also positively enjoy the book.

1 out of 5 stars OLD MAN READING A YOUNGER BOOK   November 21, 2008
The book by Vince Flynn was a definite five star book, how they could ruin the audio book by having George Guidall perform it is beyond my understanding. I am a huge Vince Flynn fan and like to hear the audio books after I have read the hardback. George Guidall sounds like a very old man trying to keep his false teeth in his mouth. This is a younger, high energy, action story. Listening to George could put you to sleep. His constant whistling "S" sound, dropping sound at the end of words and talking too fast to understand at times makes this very difficult to listen to for any length of time. Armand Schultz does some of Vince Flynn's and does an excellent job. George is just not the right person for an action story. Thank God there is a book to read and this isn't the only source for the story. DEFINITELY read the book, but you won't miss anything by passing on the audio version.

4 out of 5 stars Not Flynn's best, but still a good read   November 20, 2008
I am a big fan of Vince Flynn and have read all of his other books.

As other reviewers have noted, this book does not have Mitch Rapp, who is Flynn's central character in all of his other books, at the heart of the action. Therefore if this is the first time that you are reading Flynn, you won't really get an accurate picture of how his other books are structured.

Nonetheless, Flynn writes well and keeps the action moving. I don't think that this book is Flynn's best because sometimes it sounds a little preachy, but the topic is timely --extreme measures is a euphemism for torture-- namely, to what extent do we go to ensure national security. All of Flynn's novels tend to espouse a conservative outlook, and this one makes no bones in emphasizing the severe consequences of taking a too liberal approach to terrorism. Putting politics aside, this is a good political thriller, but not as good as the other books where Mitch Rapp is the centerpiece of the action.

3 out of 5 stars Way too much Mike Nash character   November 19, 2008
Both Extreme Measures and Protect and Defend are disappointing. Both novels have way too much time developed to Mike Nash and his home life.

Not to spoil the story line but very much enjoyed the method of attack on America.

Hopefully Flynn will spend more time on Rapp and the plot and less time of Hash in his next venture.
